Child-Friendly School - Follow-Up Support

Hero Image

The Child-Friendly School (CFS) project aims to improve the school environment to make it more attractive and safer for children. Funded by ONGD FNEL Luxembourg and CWSHK, the project supports six needy community schools a year. The project intends to help address the need to make community schools in Nepal more welcoming and safer places to learn. Therefore, the project activities are focused on creating a better educational environment (child-friendly schools) by improving schools’ infrastructures and facilities, and by strengthening the capacities of teachers, child clubs, and local committees in charge of the school management. So far, the project has supported 75 community schools in Kaski since 2015, and 12 out of them are getting follow-up support to improve their teaching-learning as well as physical environment.

At the same time, the project also aims to increase community awareness on child rights through educational and informative programmes. The project has 3 key components:

1. Improve the physical environment of the schools (classroom environment and other facilities in the schools such as sanitation, drinking water, playground, etc.) according to the school’s prioritized need.

2. Improve the quality of education through capacity building / training for teachers and other stakeholders and by providing teaching-learning resources.

3.Protect and promote child rights, especially the right to education; protection and participation, through children’s radio programme.

The project is supported by ONGD-FNEL Luxembourg and Child Welfare Scheme Honk kong.

Response to COVID-19 in Schools

The COVID-19 pandemic highly affected the child friendly school (CFS) project and its activities. Though six schools were selected for 2020, most of the planned activities for the year were put on hold due to the lockdown and school closure for a long time. However, the project has tried its best to support children to continue to learn through alternative modes. Unlike in 2019 and 2020, the project will support 10 schools each in 2021 and 2022. In the final year (2023), the project activities will focus on providing follow up support and monitoring of the schools selected in the previous years.
