Earthquake School Rebuilding Project

The devasting earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on 25 April 2015 causing a huge loss of lives and property. More than 500,000 houses were completely destroyed.

As a social and humanitarian organization, R4C provided immediate relief and assistance to the affected people in different districts that were adversely affected. 14 districts (Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhupalchowkm, Dolakha, Ramechap, Okhaldhunga, Dhading, Gorkha, Makawanpur, Rasuwa, Sindhuli and Nuwakot) were severely affected where about 5.4 million people live.

Our relief aid included food, clothes, shelter, tarpaulin and CGI sheet) and education materials support as many school collapsed. A total of 4484 households and 3 schools from 8 different districts (Kaski, Lamjung, Gorkha, Dhading, Sindhupalchowk, Syangja, Parbat and Dolakha) benefitted from our relief operation.

During the immediate relief phase, R4C distributed 2 bundles of CGI sheets to every household in Marpak village of Dhading district for temporary shelter. Marpak is a remote hilly area located in the Northern belt of the district headquarter Dhading Besi. The total population of Marpak VDC is approximately 5000 and the number of households is 1056.

Following the emergency relief aids programme, R4C in partnership with n partnership CWS HK, Children4Children Nepal and ONGD-FNEL Luxembourg and with the approval from the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), executed the Earthquake Rebuild Project. The main purpose of the project was to rebuild 8 community schools in Marpak V.D.C, (Ward no. 1 and 2 of Netrawati Rural Municipality) that were destroyed by the earthquake.

The rebuilding of 5 schools has been completed. Although there were 8 schools in the to be rebuild list of Right4Children, the reconstruction of 3 schools were withdrawn after the request from the District Education Office, Dhading as the schools were likely to be merged due to very less number of students.
